I am a Dutch videographer, working and living in Berlin since 2017.
My love for video kindled when I held a camera for the first time in Journalism school. I found that it was the most honest way of telling a story, and it was the best way to catch the atmosphere.
So when I should have gone writing for a newspaper for my internship, I changed it into filming. As a camera journalist for De Stentor, I created daily videos about local subjects. It had a great amount of freedom and I learned more each day. How to move the camera, how to make people talk, and how to edit quicker. In the last months, I published two videos a day.
Another love of mine is music. When I discovered that there was a local initiative filming artists in thrift stores, I wanted to be a part of it. I joined them as an editor, but soon I would be filming myself. Here is where I learned everything about filming with DSLR. I was thrilled by what the little camera could do and I decided that it was the way I wanted to explore that more. The way it captures the depth of field, the cinematic look, but also the lightness in movement.
In most of my work since, I have been filming with DSLR. I bought my own Canon and I expanded my gear. In 2014, I took it to Argentina and made a big jump into the unknown. Under the wings of an amazing team of journalists, I made my first tv reports and documentaries. It was a year in which dreams came true. I’ll never forget the moment when I saw my edit on national television. Having made that possible in a team effort, made it even better. I also got my first DP credit and a documentary of ours got featured by magazine The Atlantic.
After the big adventure, I have been creating video content for various clients. I also started filming weddings, which is a very grateful job to be working on. To be able to give a couple a memory of their special day that lasts forever is heartwarming. I kept on filming music sessions, and the project was doing so well, that we got invited by festivals to shoot and edit on the spot. An amazing and fun thing to do.
Although I have been working fulltime for the last couple of years and the emphasis moved away from video production, I am still active as a videographer. Together with a British journalist, I am creating video content for a YouTube-channel (you can find it here).
